Letter to the Editors of the Warner Center News, Ventura Star, Daily News & L.A. Times
In response to the editorial/article/letter you publish by the advocate of restricting our 2nd Amendment.
It was quite refreshing to read a letter on the 2nd Amendment where the 27 words were all written out.
What the writer did grasp was that our ‘right’ to “keep and bear arms” is exactly that, a ‘right’. He did not understand that the phrase “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,” is a preamble, an explanation of ‘why’ “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”. The defined right, as are all ‘rights’ in the Bill of Rights, are those of the people, individuals. The individual has the right to Freedom of Speech, Religion, Trial by jury, Due Process, to Keep and Bear Arms, not Govt. bodies. To suggest otherwise would be to wrongly suggest that the Bill of Rights grants the Govt. ‘rights’.
He also did not know that the ‘Militia’ consists (as defined by the U.S code) of “all able bodied men”. We are all the ‘Militia’. If he wants to suggest that women have no right to keep and bear arms as they are not ‘militia/men’, I think that would be a foolish argument. He also did not know that “well regulated” as used in 1787, refers to the equipping and training, meaning that the Militia’, we free men, in order to defend our ‘free State”, need to be well equipped and trained on our own in the use of our arms. It clearly does not refer to the State/Govt. having any authority to restrict our right to keep and bear arms. The 2nd is the only one of our Bill of Rights that clearly states it may not be ‘infringed’.
If there are those that think this correction/clarification is in error, or do not understand all the aspects of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms”, then I welcome the opportunity to publicly debate them.
I will defend and argue for liberty, others may argue against.
