Sons of Liberty LA Report from the LA “Gun buy-back of Dec 26th 2012
The Sons of Liberty LA Patriots were out at the location in Van Nuys on Saturday. We were out in good numbers, half a dozen of us with our 6 foot vehicle banners, flyers, signs, flags and megaphones. The early people line up to turn in their junk. They will go through several times to max out their garbage for gift cards. By 10AM the line is TWO HOURS long! The PD do not move people through very fast, but it’s the Govt! There was not one gang-banger ”turning his life over to Jesus”. Far and away most people knew they had garbage and wanted a gift card. In response to our offers of “Cash money for your gun today”, or “Donate your gun to a woman in danger” the answer was an overwhelming “it’s junk!” I talked to NRA guys who were dropping off their old junk. One of our local gun store reps was in line early getting gift cards for his junk. He then was out on the sidewalk the rest of the day to pass out flyers for people to sell their guns to his store! You never saw such a collection of junk in your life. The photos that were staged for the media were exactly that, staged. They ran out of gift cards at 2PM. Talk about angry people, they waited in line for two hours to be told, ‘sorry, out of gift cards!”. Most people waited in line until they got to the front, when told there were no gift cards, no rain check no tomorrow, they drove off! We were out telling people that they were out of gift cards. We tried. We told them the politicians lied to them. We told them that to get a gift card they need to be in line by 10AM. The early people went through three times to score all the gift cards for their garbage!
As I was setting up out front at 8AM I was approached by Det. Thompkins who told me “same rules as last time” “If anyone gets out of their vehicle with a gun and you are there you will be going to jail” Do not approach people in their vehicles. (of course as they prohibit walk-in entry everyone is in a vehicle. I was specifically told by Det. Thompkins that I, Bruce Boyer was not allowed entry, nor was my son. As to ‘Sons of liberty supporters, ’maybe’. I requested permission to walk in the entrance, I was denied, I was told by Corporal Gutierez and Thompkins that I would be arrested for trespassing. I attempted to drive into the event and was told I would be arrested for ‘trespassing’ unless I backed out of the driveway entrance.
In the morning I was hit by a delivery truck they had coming into the event. As I walked on the sidewalk I saw a truck was stopped in the driveway entrance, blocking the entire sidewalk. It was not driving in. As I was prohibited from walking in front of the truck (I would be arrested) and as it was stopped, I chose to walk behind it into the street. The driver backed the truck up, striking me, Thompkins and Gutierrez ordered the driver to proceed into the event. They called for a traffic officer, who came out a half hour later to take a report. Tomkins allowed the driver of the vehicle to leave without obtaining his ID, knowing that I had been struck. The Traffic officer took the report, but I am now told they will not file it as a hit and run. I later observed what I thought was the same truck in the area, I repeatedly asked Gutierrez to call dispatch or investigate, he refused to even report the suspected hit and run vehicle. The PD never showed up and the truck drove off.
We had no meaningful access to speak to attendees as they were directed to drive into the driveway. We were prohibited from even stepping onto the parking area of the event. As such we had no meaningful opportunity to exercise our freedom of speech except to speak to ourselves. As we are prohibited from using ‘electronic amplification devices’ we had to use megaphones that caused a good deal of discomfort.
We did observe many individuals attempt to enter the event on foot, with a cane on bicycle, or wheelchair, they were denied access.
There were numerous people IN the event who were not LAPD. I was even denied entrance with my press pass.
As to our actions with the news media; We were prevented access, the media was intentionally kept away from us. Channels 4 and 7 did come over to cover our story. We received good TV exposure and the various newspapers interviewed us as well. Most of the Media knew it was all a fraud. The fact that we have been out on these for years and have a Federal lawsuit in progress confirmed what they already knew to be true. The message that these are a fraud and the guns are junk got out. So did our message about women should be given guns so they are safe. The fact that these events allow criminals to dispose of weapons that are evidence was also made but the media I think was not willing to broadcast that fact out of fear that more criminals would use the event to dispose of evidence. We were also able to get on talk radio stations with our message.
We will be working with our attorney George Wallace to get access to this “surplus City property”, the records of it’s possession and to confirm IF they checked to see if the guns were lost or stolen as well as hold them accountable for violating our rights and interfering with our opportunity to offer the gun owners our offer. This is still the third inning of this ball game! Liberty will prevail in the end!
